POSH SPICE DISLIKES
WESTLIFE - February 2001
Today's quote of the day
from Posh Spice on Westlife: "You're asking me personally if I think they're
boring - yes, they are. Maybe they can't dance and haven't got any rhythm
because everything they do is slow."
WESTLIFE SLAM SPICES ... AGAIN -
November 2000
Westlife have continued their
tirade against the Spice Girls by claiming they are finished in America.
Speaking exclusively to worldpop, Kian Egan said, 'Victoria was on TV but
actually the last Spice Girls album hasn't done a thing in America and this one
isn't even getting touched.'
However, contrary to Egan's comments, the last Spice album, Spiceworld reached No 3 in the US Billboard charts and the Spice camp insist the American market has reacted positively to the new Spice material. Kian Egan's comments to worldpop follow weeks of sniping from both parties in the Spice Girls/Westlife chart battle, with the most malicious quotes coming from Westlife's Bryan McFadden. Yesterday British tabloids reported that McFadden had branded the Spice Girls 'rubbish', and claimed, 'they're nothing since Geri left and I'm going to take great satisfaction in beating them to a pulp.' McFadden continued his barrage against Britain's biggest girl band on the radio, calling Victoria Beckham a 'media freak' and Melanie B a 'bitch'.
Melanie C has hit back at the boy band's outburst in today's papers, labelling Westlife 'a useless bunch of talentless tossers' and claiming, 'We don't care if they beat us to No 1, it sums up how shit music is at the moment.' However, bandmate Emma Bunton told a radio station she is deeply upset at the media-fuelled rivalry with Westlife, adding that she doesn't care about the chart position and hopes that Westlife don't make themselves ill through overwork.
Bryan McFadden's only response to Emma's comments was to brand the Spice Girls 'lazy' for not doing as much promotion for their album as Westlife. It seems that Westlife's strong opinions on the Spice Girls haven't done their sales any harm. Current figures suggest the boys are outselling the Spices by three to one, after shifting over 60,000 copies of their album Coast To Coast to the Spice Girls' 20,000 of their album Forever.
MEL C LAYS INTO WESTLIFE,
ROBBIE AND GERI
News that Westlife's 'Coast To
Coast' is outselling the Spice Girl's album, 'Forever', by two-to-one has been
greeted by a torrent of abuse directed at the Irish singers and contemporary pop
in general from Mel C. Mel, who is known to be suffering from depression, also
directed her wrath at Robbie Williams and former bandmate Geri Halliwell.
"Robbie is just a cabaret singer - everyone's getting sick of him," she said speaking at the launch of the Spice Girls' album. "I'm sure he was shagging Geri - do you think she's got talent? I don't." When conversation turned to current chart rivals Westlife, Mel didn't spare them, saying: "They're a useless bunch of talentless tossers - a bunch of tits. They don't deserve to be in the charts let alone number one - I think it's disgusting bands like A1, STEPS and Westlife get to number one. It's all crap."
However, Mel confessed that she expected the Westlife album to outsell 'Forever', saying: "We don't care if they beat us to number one - they probably will but it sums up how shit music is at the moment." Mel C joins a growing list of pop luminaries, including Bono, Damon Albarn and George Michael, who have recently chosen to speak out about the perceived current sterility of the music industry.
