Delight as cancer girl meets idols
May 26 2004
A teenage cancer victim's tears have turned to joy after she met her pop idols Westlife. Fan Chloe Jackson, who is battling a brain tumour, met her heroes at the NEC thanks to Cancer Research UK.
"It was absolutely fantastic," said 14-year-old Chloe, from Kingshurst, who went to the concert with her 13-year-old friend Sheridan Joyce.
"It was just what I needed after the last few months. They have been really hard."
The Evening Mail revealed last November how a security guard at Boots ordered the youngster to take off her hat which was hiding her thinning hair and brain operation scar. The youngster fled the Fort shop in tears. Boots issued an apology and offered Chloe, a pupil at Smithswood School, Chelmsley Wood, a makeover and a £25 voucher.
"I was really embarrassed and upset by what the security guard, did but this has definitely made up for it," said Chloe.
"I've been to see West-life a few times now, but this was definitely the best.
"Meeting the boys, especially Kian, was a dream come true."
Chloe underwent the tricky brain operation in October at Birmingham Children's Hospital. She has been undergoing chemotherapy since being diagnosed with a benign brain tumour. She added: "I still have the tumour but as long as I am not poorly they will leave it alone. It's nice to have my hair back."

Still West friends?
Looks like the Westlife boys are back on speaking terms after Bryan McFadden’s walk-out. Daddy Bryan is pictured with daughter Molly and former bandmate Nicky Byrne at a Soccer Six event in aid of the Prince’s Trust. The lads shook hands and had a chat before kick off at the Madejski Stadium, Reading.
But it’s not all sweetness and light – they didn’t spend too much time reminiscing with each other. Maybe Nicky is jealous of the former tubmeister general’s new slimline figure. The six-a-side tournament for music industry celebs is now in its tenth year. Previous players include Robbiw Williams, Blue, Rod Stewart and Cat Deeley. One star on the pitch yesterday was the "saviour" of Radio 1, DJ Chris Moyles.

Westlife Say Good-bye to Boyzone
Irish boyband Westlife have broken another record previously held by Boyzone - the foursome have now appeared a record 34 times at the Point Theatre and now a plack to prove it... Westlife's manager Louis Walsh and The Point's promotion company MCD teamed up to place a reminder on the wall of the huge venue to Westlife's meteoric success.
The boys with Bryan McFadden played 24 times there and another 10 times without him making a record 34 gigs at the Dublin venue. And that doesn't count the other two concerts they have played in the city at other venues. The four boys looked proud-as-punch when unveiled the plack at the weekend - but with a possible Boyzone reunion on the cards maybe their record isn't as safe as it looks?

Westlife vowed to go on
Pop Legends Westlife last night promised to stay together for AT LEAST another three years. The lads made the vow after getting a thunderous welcome at their first home show without Bryan McFadden. And they said screaming fans at the point theatre had cemented their resolve to wow the world as a four piece. Speaking backstage after the sell out show Kian Egan said, "We want to prove to ourselves and the fans. We have a three year plan for Westlife at the moment - and it could well become a five or six year plan!"
The 70-date world tour has been a massive success with only 24 out of 480,000 asking for a refund after Bryan quit. But the boys insist they passed their biggest test at the first gig of their ten-show Dublin run. Kian said: "I think we're getting better as the tour goes on. But this is our first time home without Bryan. Every night we face an audience that's seeing the new stage show for the first time. We're not nervous but we're interested to see the reaction we get, especially in Ireland." Westlife will play to a total of 800,000 fans before heading off to Europe for more gigs. But the chart toppers are so desperate to record new material as a four piece that they've cancelled dates in South-East Asia.
Kian explained, "We want to get back to the studio. We're already picking songs. We'll record an album this summer and release it later this year. Then we'll tour next year before doing another album." On the duets album Kian said: "We've put the idea on hold because some people might have claimed we needed them to replace Bryan." The four insisted their old band mate is irreplaceable after meeting up for dinner with him in the capital last week. "We all miss each other but he seems happy. He's writing lots of good songs. Who knows maybe he can write something for us."

Good news, girls - Kian Egan isn't getting hitched after all. The Westlife hunk, reported to have popped the question to girlfriend Jodi Albert told us: "The stories are rubbish. We're both young and nowhere near ready to wed." And Kian, 24, says things are fine with the Bryan-less Westies. "We're happier and more together than ever."

Bryan may sing with Chris Doran
Hold on to your large pinches of salt! According to media sources Bryan McFadden may sing backing with Final Four when Chris Doran performs at the Eurovision tomorrow night... (Saturday) It has been a rollercoaster ride for Waterford man Chris Doran through the nerve wrecking months of the televised Euro Star competition but he couldn't be in a better position to walk away with the Eurovision crown with Bryan McFadden behind him.
Apparently Bryan scribed Chris' song If My World Stopped Turning while his wife Kerry was in the jungle on the show I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here... And according to sources he has written a few more songs for Chris' upcoming album. Bryan has flown out to Istanbul to support Chris but the big surprise on the night may be the former Westlife frontman actually on the stage as one of the backing singers.

Westlife's newest band member is from Grimsby.
Former Hereford School pupil Richard Pardy (38) is touring the world with the Irish chart-toppers. A phone call at 5pm on March 9, the day Bryan McFadden quit the band, led to Richard getting the chance of a lifetime. He now plays saxophone and percussion with the six-piece band behind the four singers.
"It took just two days to turn my life around and then I was in Dublin with the band," he said.
"I have never done anything as big as this. They are huge. I did not realise how big they are." His first show with Westlife was at Belfast Odyssey.
"The sheer noise and excitement took my breath away," Richard said.
"It is a sell-out tour. Where most bands do one or two shows at a venue, Westlife do a week."
Richard plays in front of audiences of around 13,000 most nights, mainly teenagers. Richard said: "They work really hard and care about the show they put on.
"I very quickly became part of the family. I am impressed and pleased to be a part of the band." It is the first time Westlife has had a saxophone player. On set, he has a solo performance, coming out the floor of the stage. He added: "Wherever we go, we are whisked away. It is quite chaotic."
His star status is the peak of 20 years as a professional musician. Before his meteoric rise to stardom, Richard was on tour with rock 'n' roll legend Marty Wilde and his Wildcats, who are due to perform at Grimsby Auditorium on Sunday. Richard said: "With Westlife, I will have achieved two of my life's ambitions - to play at Birmingham NEC and Wembley."
Westlife's gross income since they formed about five years ago is £25-million, eclipsing any current boy band. Richard, married to Isobel, of Cleethorpes, is midway through his first UK tour with Westlife and will conquer Europe next month. He has also signed up to play with the band on their 2005 tour.
"I miss home a lot, my mother and my old friends at the youth orchestra in Grimsby," he said. "It would be nice to say hello to them again soon." And he recalled happy days cycling around The Wolds and out to Donna Nook. Westlife broke records by becoming the first group to achieve number ones with their first seven releases.

WESTLIFE CAN'T WAIT FOR DATE AT CASTLE
12:00 - 10 May 2004
The world's biggest boy band revealed today that they can't wait for their summer show in Exeter - and might even stay on afterwards for a break in the city. Westlife's massive concert at Powderham Castle in August is the final date of their mammoth UK tour. And despite rumours and speculation that it will be their last, the Echo can exclusively reveal the band's future is far from over. The Irish group, who have clocked up 12 No.1 hits, are set to perform in the castle grounds on August 2 - it will be the first time they have ever headlined a gig in Exeter. It is also their only Westcountry date this year.
Speaking exclusively to the Echo, band member Mark Feehily revealed that he and his pals might end up sticking around for a few days afterwards to explore the city. The 23-year-old idol said: "After the tour we'll have a few days off. We've never been to Exeter before. If we like a place we've been known to just stay there instead of going home.
"Come the end of the tour we will be probably be looking forward to seeing our friends and family - but it's a definite possibility."
Westlife have notched up 32 million record sales and are the only artists in history to win the prestigious Record of the Year title three times. Up to 20,000 fans are expected to see the pop heartthrobs at Powderham in what promises to be their most spectacular and ambitious tour to date. Earlier this year it had been feared the concert might be cancelled when Bryan McFadden announced his decision to quit the group, wanting to spend more time with his wife, former Atomic Kitten Kerry, and their young daughters. Fans were relieved to hear that despite his departure, the concert was still going ahead as planned.
The lads are currently in the middle of their massive sell-out UK Turnaround arena tour, which will see them play 53 sell-out dates throughout the UK and Ireland between March and June before they head off on the European leg of the tour. More outdoor concerts are planned for the summer, with their final show being at the picturesque Powderham Castle - named as the venue of the year in the Event Industry Awards - on Monday, August 2. Powderham's reputation as one of the best open-air venues for live music in the country was cemented last year when 13,000 people went to see Elton John play live in the grounds, with acts such as Blue, Jools Holland and Status Quo also performing.
Mark said the band are particularly looking forward to coming to Exeter. "As it's the last date of the tour I'm sure that there will be a bit of party that night. It's been a great tour so far and as you're travelling with the same people for four months you get to know everybody involved in it really well, then suddenly that's it.
"So the last day of the tour is usually quite sad. It will be a milestone though because we'll have another tour under our belt." With the release of their fifth album in November, he reassures their fans it won't be the last they'll hear from them.
"Ever since the release of our second and third album people have been constantly speculating when we're going to split up. Nobody knows what the future holds, and I'm not going to say that Westlife are going to be here forever but what I can say is that at this moment in time we intend going full steam ahead."
Tickets are still available for Westlife's Powderham Castle performance on 08700 722169.

More West-strife as Kian may leave boyband for lover Jodi The People (London, England); 5/9/2004 Byline: JOE OLIVER
POP insiders sensationally hinted last night that Kian Egan could be next to quit Westlife because of the demands of his knockout girlfriend. Hollyoaks babe Jodi Albert has complained that she never gets to see Kian because he is always so busy - and she's not happy.
The Channel 4 soap star insisted her Irish lover was not under the thumb. But she is gutted they don't get to spend a lot of time together.
"We're getting on really well, but we only get to see each other about every two weeks, which is really annoying," she said.
"We're both doing lots of work at the moment and too busy to settle down in one place."
The stunning brunette, who plays dusky Debbie Dean in Hollyoaks, met the 23-year-old singer at a Party in the Park event a year ago. At the time, Jodi had just quit pop group Girl Thing who had a Top 10 hit with Last One Standing. She has helped tame the Westlife bad boy, who recently claimed his booze benders were a thing of the past. Bryan McFadden left Westlife in March so he could see more of bubbly wife Kerry and their two young daughters. He said he wanted to concentrate on his family life with the I'm A Celebrity winner.
Westlife, who have had 12 No 1 hits and are currently on a 70-date tour, drove fans wild last week when they played on a floating stage at Laganside in Belfast for BBC Music Life. But one insider revealed that beneath the surface tensions were bubbling. He said: "The boys really are worried in case Jodie makes Kian do a Bryan and quit the band.
"One leaving was bad enough but if Kian was to go as well it really would be the end."

From Bryan McFat-un to Bryan McThin-un
Porky ... Bryan McFat-un
WELL, well. I never thought I’d see the day when I reckoned BRYAN McFADDEN was a bit of a sex god. Of all the lads in WESTLIFE I always had the former boy band star down as the pie-eating fatso who you wouldn’t touch with a barge pole – particularly given the competition of SHANE FILAN, KIAN EGAN, MARK FEEHILY and ... oh go on then, even NICKY BYRNE.
But I’m now eating a bit of pie myself – humble pie that is and I think a few of you might be too after seeing these before and after pictures. Bryan has made a complete transformation, blossoming into the best-looking bloke on the celebrity party circuit.
Sex god ... Bryan McThin-un Picture: XPOSURE
Looking tanned and lean, he sported some rather fetching stubble on a night out at London’s 10 Rooms on Monday, right. The only suspect thing about him was his uncool T-shirt with basketball legend SHAQUILLE O’ NEAL plastered across it. Bryan says his slimline look is down him having kicked booze. The hunk, married to I’m A Celebrity’s queen of the jungle KERRY McFADDEN, told me: “I’ve not been on any particular health kick, I’ve just stopped drinking over the last three weeks and I’ve lost more than a stone. I feel great.” Maybe the other lads should take notice.

Westlife star pops question
Westlife star Kian Egan is to marry Hollyoaks babe Jodi Albert next year. The Irish heart-throb popped the question on a rare weekend off in his home town of Sligo.
But-oh, the romance-he was lounging on the sofa when he blurted out the proposal and still hasn't got around to buying a ring.A pal said: "Kian was at home sitting on the couch when he popped the question, "Jodi who plays Debbie Dean in the Channel 4 soap, burst into tears as she accepted.
Kian and Jodi, who have been dating for a year, plan to wed next summer. When they do it will mean Mark Feehily is the only bachelor left in the band-now being dubbed Wedlife. But Jodi must wait until the summer for that ring. The pal said: "Kian plans to get down the jeweller's when the boys finish their sell-out tour in July,"

Teenager prepares for Westlife date
When Stefanie Stretton won a singing competition at school, she had no idea she would be supporting her idols Westlife at a huge concert. The stunned 16-year-old beat off 14 other pupils in a Pop Idol-style final at Chantry School and was only told afterwards that she would be singing to thousands of people at the gig in Chantry Park, Ipswich, on July 31.
Stefanie, of Skylark Lane, Ipswich, said: "I was gob-smacked. There were a few tears from people, including myself. I couldn't speak, it was indescribable." Stefanie has since taken it all in her stride, revelling in the attention and looking forward to meeting her idols. She said: "My mum and I were dreaming that Westlife would pick us up in their Limousine.
"Ever since I got interested in performing, I've really been looking forward to people coming up to me and asking for my autograph.
"It is one of my dreams that a recording company will run up to me when I am on stage and say, 'that's really, really good'." She won the contest with Show Me Heaven by Maria Mckee, but now has to choose two upbeat tunes to kick-start the event. She has even cut out chocolate and is drinking lots of fluids to keep her vocal chords in good shape.
"I'm really excited, just ecstatic about it," she said. "The next day everybody was calling me so they could take my photo on their mobile phones and I have had some friends ask for my autograph.
"It's just great fun, everybody is talking about it and I am really a celebrity at school." She added: "It's getting to the crunch stage now and the clock is counting down. My mum will get really worried and will not sleep the night before. I am kind of worried it will go wrong."

'Skyscraper' hotel to overlook Westlife singer's lavish home
SLIGO is to have its first skyscraper hotel soaring 15 storeys high. Future guests at the hotel could enjoy a bird's eye view of the home of Westlife star, Shane Filan.

WESTLIFE have officially killed off former band member BRYAN McFADDEN by declaring: As far as we're concerned, hes dead and gone. Singer NICKY BYRNE admitted he and the rest of the band were devastated by Bryans shock departure and have turned their backs on him to succeed as a foursome.
In an exclusive, emotional interview in Belfast after the groups opening gig of their world tour without Bryan a furious Nicky told me: When he first told us, it was like a knife through the heart and I'll never be able to explain that feeling. I spent so much time trying to talk him round you wouldn't believe but there was no way any of us could change his mind."
Nicky said he and the others SHANE FILAN, MARK FEEHILY and KIAN EGAN made a deliberate effort not to mention Bryan during the concert. He said: If we keep mentioning him on stage it will only make our fans think we aren't moving on and that's what we have to do.
As far as Westlife are concerned, Bryans dead and gone. Personally we all still speak to him I was texting him this morning. But he has made his decision and its a fresh start for us as a foursome. We've all been like brothers for the past five years and not having him around now is different but there is no point dwelling on it.

BRYAN'S JUNGLE BOOKED
Mar 31 2004
While his former band mates kicked off their sell-out world tour, Bryan McFadden is already planning his comeback. But he's not of launching himself as a solo star quite yet. We hear Bry is set to follow in his wife's footsteps - and join the cast of I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here.
TV bosses have been very keen to get the 24-year-old to star in the next instalment of their smash-hit show which will go out on air in November. And it seems Bry fancies himself as the next King of the Jungle.
"He thinks it'll be a great idea and after seeing how well Kerry did on the show then he's got a great chance to win it too," says a close source.
Bryan quit Westlife three weeks ago after spending six years with Kian, Shane, Mark and Nicky. He said he wanted to spend more time with Kerry and their two daughters. As well as writing the Irish entry for the Eurovision Song Contest, he is also managing a South African band called Franklin.
"Bryan wanted some time off, but the show doesn't start filming for another eight months so he'll be raring to go then." And no doubt he'll be - er - pleasantly surprised to learn that one of his companions in the jungle could be Adam Ant. The former singer - who was treated in a psychiatric hospital after waving a gun in a London pub - has been approached to join in the fun and games.
Could make for some interesting viewing... Meanwhile, the Westlife lads - who started their Turnaround tour in Belfast on Monday night - said that they had made a conscious decision not to mention Bryan during the concert. Kian told 3am: "He's the one who decided he didn't want to be there, so what would have been the point?"
He also revealed that the boys would welcome Bryan back.
"We never close doors. I can't imagine that he would want to come back though. I just can't see it happening." A plus point for the hardest working group in the world is that they get to split their money four ways now instead of five now that Bryan's gone. They each pocket
a healthy £600,000 for this tour. Kian's girlfriend, Hollyoaks star Jodi Albert, 20, was cheering him on at the start of the tour, but he revealed he's not ready for marriage yet.
"She's a sweetheart but I'm only young," he told us. "Anyway, Jodi lives in London and I live in Ireland, but we see each other when we can." Meanwhile, Kian has his own plans for life after Westlife.
"Our manager Louis Walsh has asked me to join him and manage new bands, "he says.
"But it would be really strange to watch them get up on stage and not be able to join them."

Westlife send flowers to Hayley's funeral
Boy band Westlife yesterday sent flowers to the funeral of "angelic" schoolgirl Hayley Williams who plunged 100ft from a white-knuckle ride. Hundreds of friends were at the service for the 16-year-old Sunday school teacher who was killed on a family trip to the theme park.
Hayley adored the chart- topping band and had been to see them as a 16th birthday treat just two weeks before she died. When the band heard about her tragic death they sent a signed T-shirt and a scarf to her family in honour of one of their biggest fans. In the Baptist church in Pontypool, the Rev Bev Morgan said, "Hayley lived all kinds of music but her favourite pop group was Westlife"
