Westlife make fan's day Mar 25 2005
By The Evening Chronicle
Westlife fan Sarah Stokel's dreams came true when the heart-throb singers
picked her out from a crowd and invited her backstage.
Sarah, 20, from Tanfield Lea, got her reward for sheer persistence after a
six-hour stake-out of the boys' hotel.
Sarah, who has Down's Syndrome, hung around Newcastle's Malmaison hotel with
friend Joanne Thompson, hoping for a glimpse of her heroes during their stay
in the city earlier this month.
After watching the Irish band perform at the Metro Radio Arena on the Friday
night, the girls did some detective work and found out where they were staying
before their second show on the Saturday.
Joanne, who got to know Sarah through Durham County Council's volunteer
befriending scheme, said: "We met them last time they were up here and Joanne
got her photo taken with Shane Filan. We had it printed on to a T-shirt so she
wore it when we went down to the Malmaison.
"We had lunch there and bumped into Mark Feehily, who was on his way out to do
a bit of shopping. I grabbed his arm and he sat and had a little chat with us.
"He asked us if we'd enjoyed the show and we told him we were going back that
night as well to see them a second time. He was absolutely great."
Later in the afternoon, Joanne and Sarah caught Shane on his way to the gym.
He was dashing and said he couldn't stop but promised the girls he'd be back
later.
A couple of hours later the band's bus pulled up outside. By this time there
was a big crowd of fans all hoping to catch a glimpse of the boys and Sarah
and Joanne were feeling a little disheartened.
"There were literally hundreds of girls there," said Joanne. "It was
ridiculous. We went outside just to wave the lads off when Dave, their
bodyguard, came up to us. He asked if we were the girls who'd been sitting in
the hotel. We said yes. He said: `Right, get to the back door of the Arena as
quick as you can and ask for me'.
"So we jumped in a taxi and followed the tour bus. "We got to the gates and
were led straight past all the screaming girls. I was shaking so much."
Sarah, Joanne and Joanne's mother Joan enjoyed nearly an hour mingling
backstage with the band, posing for pictures and getting autographs. "They
were fabulous," gushed Joanne. "Shane said he really liked Sarah's T-shirt.
All of them were just milling about and chatting. It was very relaxed. Shane
had kept his promise - which just makes me an even bigger fan. Not that it
would take very much anyway!
"It made it extra special when on our way home Sarah turned to me and said:
`You are the greatest carer anyone could ever have and it's made my life,
never mind my day We're all still walking round in a bit of a daze. They didn't do any of this
for any publicity, just out of utter kindness."

Russian is Alsou a hit with Westlife
She's the foxy Russian singer who won me over months ago - and even Westlife
have fallen for the lovely Alsou's charms. The stunning 21-year-old - whos debut
single Always On My Mind is out soon - is on tour with the Irish crooners. And
Alsou told me she's really hit it off with them... so much that they've asked
her to record a single with them. She said: "Westlife are great - really
down-to-earth, lovely guys. We all sit and chat before the show. They've been so
nice.
"Louis Walsh has already suggested that I record with Westlife .Nothing is
certain yet but it's definitely a good idea.
"It would probably be a ballad - that's their strongest thing and mine too so it
would make sense.
"I would definitely like to do it, it would be amazing."
Alsou has already notched up a massive hit in Russia with a duet
with Enrique Iglesias. And her second single, Inspired, features rapper Nelly so
she's no stranger to working with stars. She's also starred in teen horror flick
Spirit Trap alongside one of Britain's sexiest minxes, pop star-turned-actress
Billie Piper.
Alsou said: We shot the film last summer and it was interesting as it was my
first movie.
"Billie was the sweetest girl, really lovely. I can't wait to see her in Doctor

According to the Sun, the pale-faced singer who has landed a No1 hit

The singer has landed a ˘G50,000 contract to become the face of

Relief video, the paper informs us.
The paper has stuck Tony's head on a lump of the blue smelly stuff,
and slapped Steve whatshisname from X Factor on a piece of Roquefort, Il
Divo onto a slab of Camembert, Westlife on an Edam ball and Darius on a
pack of Dairylea.
Hilarious.
Apparently, Westlife are Edam because they're good looking, semi-hard and a firm favourite with kids, while Il Divo are soft and
creamy with a slightly salty taste.

West is still best as Irish charmers stay No.1 with fans
LET'S HEAR IT: Nicky gets an enthusiastic audience going MARK and Shane prove
they are in good voice FAN-TASTIC: as the girls go wild over Westlife
WESTLIFE brought a bit of Las Vegas to Clydeside last night, as they dazzled
10,000 fans with neon glitz, glam and high-camp of consummate showbiz
performers. Before they took the SECC stage on the first gig of this three-night
run on the Number Ones Tour, video screens flashed through their astounding
career, charting the seven consecutive number ones and impressive awards
they've amassed.
With pyros popping they were led through the crowd like prize-fight boxers,
marching to the stage and whipping into opener Uptown Girl, swiftly followed by
a rendition of Mandy that would've brought a lump to Barry Manilow's throat.
Their dance routines were none the worse with four instead of five, since the
departure of Brian McFadden in pursuit of solo credibility.
However, their appeal is sheer people power: cheeky Irish charm, the
naughty twinkle in their eyes and their accessibility. The audience - a
mixture of 30-somethings, babes in arms and tearful teens - couldn't get
enough.
Kian was first to whip up the crowd, but Mark, Shane and Nicky shared
cheerleading duties. They swung from sultry, pouty ballads to the disco medley
with a
talented four-piece backing through I Will Survive, Disco Inferno, Pretty
Woman, Footloose, I Feel Fine and Don't Stop Till You Get Enough. The 'Rat
Pack segment' saw high-jinks round a cocktail bar in their tribute to Sinatra's
heyday.
It was a feast for Westlife gluttons and the boys wound down with What Makes A
Man before encore Flying Without Wings, for which they rose above the
stage on individual podiums.

It'll be like old times
IT'S a long time since I put on football boots for an 11-a-side match, but I
am looking forward to Easter Sunday when I will be reunited with many of my old
Liverpool team-mates. We are playing a Celebrity XI in aid of the Asian Tsunami
Appeal at Anfield and it will be just like old times. Among my old mates
who have said they will play are Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen, John Barnes,
Phil Thompson, Bruce Grobbelaar and John Aldridge, while the celebrities
will include Bryan McFadden, Nicky Byrne, from Westlife, actors Shane
Ritchie and Ralf Little, athlete John Regis and the former Ireland
international Niall Quinn.
The Liverpool team will be under our ex-manager Roy Evans and Harry
Redknapp is taking charge of the celebrities. It should be a great occasion in
aid of a very good cause. All the details are on the Liverpool FC website.
I have been playing small-sided matches for a long time since retiring
from the game, but I don't play 11-a-side games too often. I turned out last
year in Florence, in Italy, in front of a 40,000 crowd alongside Paul
Gascoigne and Paulo Di Canio. We drew 5-5 against a team which included
Rod Stewart and I scored a couple of goals.
Although I don't miss playing so much these days it is always good to take
part in games like this, particularly in front of big crowds, although I
must admit it isn't so good the next day! In fact, I find I enjoy playing now
much more than I did when I was playing at the highest level. I suppose
that could have something to do with having no pressure on the field.
I try to keep fit by doing some running, but since I took the job at
Chester I tend to stand back in training and watch what's going on. You
miss so much when you are involved in training matches. As well as meeting up
with former team-mates for various charity matches I try to keep in touch
either socially or professionally. Since I have been manager at Chester I
have been in contact with various people associated with Liverpool FC for
advice. There is so much to learn in this job.
Finally, I would like to thank all the City fans who got behind the
team against Southend last Saturday. I thought we gave our best home
performance of the season and the supporters were fantastic.I hope we can
carry on like this until the end of the season.

Former Liverpool stars to play in charity special
Liverpool legends John Barnes, Kenny Dalglish and Kevin Keegan will join former
Irish international favourites Ronnie Whelan, John Aldridge and event organiser
Jason McAteer in a big tsunami aid charity game to take place on Easter
Sunday.Liverpool's stars of yesteryear, which will be guided by former Liverpool

and present, with Bryan McFadden renewing acquaintances with Nicky Byrne, who
was a Leeds United youth team goalkeeper in the past.
The match, to be played under the title Tsunami Soccer Aid, has gathered great
support in the Merseyside area, and a near sell-out crowd is expected on the
day. The brainchild of current Tranmere Rovers star McAteer and football agent
Dave Lockwood, the game will take place at Anfield, which has generously been
provided free of charge for the occasion by Liverpool chief Rick Parry.
All proceeds from the Tsunami Soccer Aid match will be donated to the disaster
appeal fund, and McAteer is delighted to be able to generate much-needed support
for the stricken south-east Asian region. The Scouse star, who won the
last of his 52 senior caps against Brazil last year, said: ˇ§Just like the rest
of the world, the football community is determined to do all we can to help the
people affected by the Tsunami tragedy. Tsunami Soccer Aid is a symbol of the
solidarity felt within our game.
"We have all been touched by the togetherness shown by others in the relief
effort. We wanted to do our bit and felt we had the right connections in
football to hopefully make this initiative a success. We see Tsunami Soccer Aid

WESTLIFE'S Kian Egan proved he's a real mammy's boy yesterday - by buying her a
new CAR. The singer made it clear his mum Patricia is still Queen Of His Heart
by pulling out all the stops for Mother's Day.
The generous pop star also sent flowers and jetted home to Sligo to join his
family in cooking a special meal for her. Kian, 24, said: "I always get my
mother some flowers on Mother's Day, it's bit like Valentine's Day with your
girlfriend.
"There are seven kids in our family, so we'd all try to get together and cook a
big meal and do all the housework for the day. It's important that she gets to
put her feet up."
Mother's Day isn't the only reason Patricia Egan was smiling - as one of her

Under Cover - Ant and Dec got Westlife
When you're looking like that, no-one can recognise you. And that's exactly what
happened this week when Ant and Dec went Undercover on Westlife! Preparing
for their show at Wembley, little did the Irish fellas know they were about to
be conned – big style!
First off, they had to deal with a collapsed fan at a pre-show autograph
session. The crazed woman? None other than Megan Bates – aka Ant. It
must happen to the boys all the time, but they were concerned for the
lass.
Until another disruption.
A disgruntled father, Jeff Bates – aka Dec – dragged his daughter along to
Wembley and with a loud speaker told the band that they couldn't perform
that night as their concert the previous evening had made his daughter
temporarily deaf! Bemused, the lads looked on as Jeff suddenly bellowed at
Megan: `Oh
my God, that's my wife!'
Needless to say, Jeff was appalled that the band had managed to make his
daughter deaf and cause his wife to collapse and sought redemption… in the form
of posed photographs. Megan certainly took advantage of Nicky's close
proximity to her by making him sniff her chest, poor guy, before Ant and
Dec came clean.
`Fool Again' springs to mind, wonder if the Irish lads sung it that
evening?!

Brain birthmark girl meets stars
A teenager born with a birthmark on her brain had a face-to-face meeting with
pop band Westlife after a surprise phonecall from one of singers.
Sarah Mole, 19, was given tickets to band's Cardiff concert on Wednesday after
they heard about her condition.
Sarah from Abercwmboi in the Cynon Valley, has had surgery to remove the
birthmark which causes epilepsy. She met the band after a promise by singer
Shane Filan who rang her while she was in hospital awaiting surgery. The concert
at Cardiff International Area was held on Wednesday. Sarah and her family were
given tickets to attend and got to meet the band after the show after singer
Shane Filan made a surprise phonecall to Sarah hours before she was due to
undergo major surgery in December.
It was the first outing Sarah had had since the operation. She was a bit gutted
about not being able to spend a lot of time with them But Sarah's mother Karen
said that although they were grateful to the band for their time, they would
have liked to have spent a bit more time with the pop stars.
"Sarah was thrilled to see them but there was a lot of other people also waiting
to meet the band and we didn't get a chance to speak to them much," she said.
She said that Sarah who suffers speech problems following the surgery was
disappointed not to be able to talk to the band for longer.
"It is hard for her and she needs time for her speech but the band had to meet
other people so she was a bit gutted about not being able to spend a lot of time
with them.
Sarah briefly met members of Westlife after the concert
"They signed the programmes we bought but we weren't able to get a group
photograph with the boys and Sarah. We did get some individual shots but would
have liked to have got one with the whole group. We took a lot of photographs
and we are grateful to them for what they did but it would have been nice for
Sarah to have been able to spend more time with them. It was very quick - just a
few minutes really."
She said Sarah was making good progress with her recovery but said it was a very
slow process. Sarah, who has two A levels and seven GCSEs and wants to become an
accountant when she has recovered, has had a number of operations to remove the
birthmark. She started suffering from epileptic attacks at the age of 13. After
the first operation in 2001, she spent five weeks in intensive care and was in
complete paralysis for five days. She underwent further surgery in December.

He added they would continue as long as "the four of us love what we do and we
get on. We are going to finish when we want to finish, when the fans stop buying
our records."
Meanwhile, Westlife manager Louis Walsh revealed he would be forming another
boyband with Westlife singer Kian Egan in two to three years. However, he said
there were two more albums left in Westlife.
