Louis Walsh had a few words about boy bands... 5/01/01
Walsh said that each
member is picked to appeal to a different type of girl. The greater the
difference in band members, the wider the audience they attract, he insists.
"The girls must believe in the back of their minds that one day they'll go out
with [every band member]. It doesn't help the fanbase if one of the boys is in a
relationship or having a baby, but I can't control their lives as much as I'd
like to. When you see facial hair, earrings and tattoos and they start to talk
about being individuals, it's time to go to the conveyor belt and get a new
set." And Walsh believes 5 is the magic number for a group. "It gives people
just enough to look at. BBMak and 911 have three, and it doesn't look right."
And about Boyzone: "I was tempted to have four [members] because it would have
been much easier to fit them in a Taxi."

BIOGRAPHY - Westlife In Real Life by Lise Hand
Louis Walsh got his first huge international break when he launched Boyzone in 1993.Everyone thought that a boy band would never work yet 12 million album sales later Louis is having the last laugh. In 1998 Louis, knowing time was running out for Boyzone went in search of another boy band.
When he met Shane Filan and Kian Egan in The POD in Dublin he knew that he wanted a band along the lines of Boyz II Men with great vocalists. Louis reckons that signing with RCA Records was the band's biggest break. "Simon Cowell was really supportive and offered us the deal we were after". Westlife's manager agrees the lads work incredibly hard and that they are on-call 24 hours a day. Louis isn't afraid to crack the whip either. If they start moaning I just say "SHUT UP! You could be playing Strandhill tonight! (Which is a small village outside Sligo, where Kian has a house). I always chose Kian to get messages to the band. I shout and scream at him if they were out late the night before or look terrible!"

Louis works just as hard himself he manages Westlife, Ronan Keating, Samantha Mumba and Bellefire. He has 3 phones, office, home and mobile. He works 12-hour days and sometimes takes his phone with him in the bath! "I never travel with the band, my job is to man the phones and make sure everything is going alright". Ask Westlife how hard their boss works, they all do mean impressions of him in action!
